When I think of wool, I think of warm and cozy. You may be thinking the same thing, and have your eye on a wool mattress topper. But the concern comes with it being hot in the summer months. It makes you stop and think, “Is a wool mattress topper hot”?
Because of wool’s fiber structure, a wool mattress topper is not hot. Wool fibers have a unique makeup that allows air to be trapped inside acting like a thermal barrier between the outside air and a person’s skin. So wool feels cool in warmer temperatures and warmer in cooler temperatures.
So believe it or not, wool is cooling, and warming just when you need it. It just has that unique wonderful quality about it. Further down I give some other qualities that wool mattress toppers have.

How Exactly Is A Wool Mattress Topper Not Hot?
It is like a thermos, when you fill a thermos with your favorite hot beverage, it keeps it hot and when you fill the same thermos with a cold beverage, it keeps that beverage cold. That is similar to how wool works, with an air-locking barrier similar to a thermos.
Wool fibers are made up of protein molecules (Keratin) that effectively trap air and moisture. These molecules act as a thermal barrier and help keep your body heat in and wick moisture away from your body when the body heats up. Thus always helping in regulating the body’s temperature which keeps you comfortable.
Wool does this so well, I wear lightweight woven wool clothing all year round. It is actually my favorite summer attire and I love my wool socks all summer.
What is The Best Wool Mattress Topper?
You want a wool mattress topper to provide support foremost, the main reason for a topper is to give added cushion to your mattress.
Another thing to look for is how pure the wool is in the product you are purchasing. Has it been thoroughly cleaned and not treated with chemicals? This is a very important aspect to keep any impurities from your sleeping environment. You don’t want to be breathing chemicals while you sleep, which most of us do if we are not sleeping on natural fiber mattresses.
Above all else you want the mattress topper to be comfortable. If you are watching out for the two above-mentioned scenarios then the comfort level is sure to just be there.
Different types of wool fibers come from different breeds of sheep. There are breeds of sheep that grow more coarse wool and other breeds of sheep that grow softer wool. Just like humans have many different textures of hair. The same can be said of sheep.
So the best type of wool for mattress toppers would be from the sheep breed(s) that has softer wool. The softest wool is from the Merino Sheep. Their wool is finer and more flexible with a smaller micron count.
A micron count is the diameter of the wool fiber. The Merino Sheep’s wool micron count is smaller than human hair. The smaller the micron measurement, the softer the wool. So Merino Wool would be the best wool for mattress toppers. Plus organic in all the fibers used is top key!
In addition, you would want the wool mattress topper to be covered in wool cover also. This would give you the greatest benefits and most comfort. Sleep & Beyond is a company that I found that gives all these qualities and more to their products.
Are Wool Mattress Toppers Comfortable?
Is sleeping on a cloud comfortable? If you answered, yes to this then you just got your answer about wool mattress toppers being comfortable. The first time you lay your body on a wool topper, you will think you landed on a cloud. You will feel like you are in heaven and you will never want to return to your old ways again!
Wool is one of the most comfortable fibers I have experienced. As I said earlier, it keeps you warm and cozy and cool and collected. Who doesn’t want that? I just cannot say enough good things about wool. And added it to your mattress in a way of a wool mattress topper is a great way to get introduced to wool as a sleeping aid.
Try adding a wool mattress to this wool mattress topper and you will experience the best sleep you have ever had. It is unbelievable how something that has been used for centuries is not more popular than it is for sleeping.

How Long Do Wool Mattress Toppers Last?
Wool is extremely durable. If it is maintained properly it can last decades. Because of the resiliency of wool, it can take a beating. The extreme flexibility of wool fibers beats the competition.
Wool fibers are so durable they can be bent up to 20,000 times without breaking. Cotton cannot stand up to that test. Cotton is failing with only a few thousand bends.

3-Inch Wool Mattress Topper: Is This Thick Enough?
A 3-inch wool mattress topper is pretty substantial. The average height of a mattress topper is 2 inches. So to add extra softness to your mattress a 3-inch would be a good size.
If you are looking to go thicker, that would surely give you a more luxurious comfortable experience. But before going thicker with a mattress topper, you might want to consider how high your mattress is already. You don’t want to go so high you need a ladder to get into bed.
I think a 3-inch is a good starter topper. If you find later that you need more or the height of your bed is not too high then you can always add another topper on top.
Sheepskin Mattress Topper: Is This The Same As A Wool Mattress Topper?
There is a difference, but they are very similar in functionality. Both are wool products and both offer the benefits that wool offers.
The difference is, a sheepskin mattress topper is usually the wool fibers exposed, so you are basically laying right on the wool itself with just a sheet between you and the topper. This topper would be actual pelts joined together to the desired size.
The wool mattress topper is the wool that is sheared off of the sheep. It is prepared by cleaning and carding it into batting. Then layers of batting are stacked on top of each other and covered with a cover, either cotton or wool, and then the layers of wool are tacked in a way as to keep all the layers together from shifting.
Both toppers are placed on the bed mattress the same way, on top of the mattress, and the bed sheets are placed on top of the topper.
Can You Wash A Wool Mattress Topper?
Most wool products today are machine washable and machine dryable. They can go into the washer with a cold setting and a very low setting in the dryer.
They come out beautiful if washed correctly according to the manufacturer’s instructions. I have wool articles that I wash in the machine, but some of my vintage wool clothes I do by hand.
