Popular Times For Flowers
Over 50% of flowers bought in the world are self bought. That means people are buying them for themselves. Like I just did recently. I like to buy a bouquet of flowers once in a while for myself. Cutting wildflowers are my favorite way to make a bouquet.
Flowers are enjoyed for many different occasions, such as...
- Valentines’ Day
- Easter and Passover
- Business Achievements
- Mothers Day
- Thanksgiving
- Hanaka
- Christmas
- Weddings
- Proms
- Birthdays
But you don’t have to have a special occasion to enjoy flowers. I recently bought myself a bouquet of flowers at the grocery store, just because. It was nice seeing them every day in my kitchen.
There are many easy to grow flowers that you can enjoy in pots on a balcony or a small patio or in a backyard. If you have the room you can grow many fast-growing flowers in a flower bed, to enjoy as cut flowers.
Going out into nature or a friend’s backyard and cutting flowers to display around your home is a wonderfully inexpensive way to really enjoy flowers. Here are some ways that you can enjoy flowers in your life.
Beautiful Flower Bouquets
Bouquets of flowers are the easiest, fastest way to bring beauty into your life, from picking your own in a wildflower field to buying flower bouquets online. There are tons and tons of choices. So many in fact it could get overwhelming. Here I will try and simplify your flower choosing experience and get you quickly enjoying flowers.
The first and simplest way would be to go to your local grocery store or florist and see what they have in way of bouquets of flowers. Bring them home, put them in water, (they usually have a little packet included which is made up of, citric acid, sugar, bleach) to help prolong the flowers.
There are a few steps needed to ensure you get the best bang for your money and help the flowers last as long as they can, which could be at least a week or more if you’re lucky.
Step 1
When getting them home choose your vase or container you are going to put them in. Make sure the container is sterilized with a thorough cleaning and peroxide or bleach.
Step 2
Open up the packaging that the flowers are in and separate the stems so you can trim the stems and size the flowers to fit the vase.
Step 3
Prepare the water in the vase with the content of the included packet as directed on the packet. If a packet of plant food was not included you can make your own. Here is the recipe….
1 t sugar
1 t household bleach
2 t lemon or lime juice
1 qt lukewarm water
This solution will help the flowers last longer. If you wish not to go to this length than, you can put them straight in a vase that has been sterilized and use freshwater.
Step 4
I put my vase near the edge of a table or countertop and measure the stem next to the vase to get the height I want and cut it at an angle for the most surface for water absorption. I also sometimes cut the stems at different heights to make a more interesting arrangement if you have larger and smaller flowers. Also, trim off some of the leaves towards the bottom so they are not immersed in the water.
Step 5
Step back and now enjoy your flowers for a week or two. You can also do water changes to help keep things fresh. If you are concerned about not having another packet to treat the water, you can also mix up a batch yourself. Follow the recipe above.
Try Wholesale
If you would like more variety and colors to choose from and to save some money, try a wholesaler near you. You can do a google search for flower wholesalers near me.
If this is not an option because there are none to be found than local discount superstores like Costco and Sam’s Club usually carry flowers.
The next choice would be a florist for finding cut flowers in a variety and colors that you like. But they can be a little more pricey. But the splurge is worth the experience.
Choosing Your Cut Flowers
Choosing flowers in various shapes, sizes and textures make an interesting bouquet. Flowers of the same color in different hues can be one way to make an arrangement. A rainbow of colors can be a fun bouquet. My favorite is a rainbow arrangement.
Small filler stems to help fill in the bouquet such as Baby’s Breath, Bells Of Ireland, Bouvardia, Leatherleaf Fern to name a few. The salesperson at the florist could help you with this.

Potted Flowering Plants
Another way to enjoy flowers quickly is by buying already potted flowering plants. You can often buy a potted plant at your local big box store but they are usually seasonal in some areas.
Flowering potted plants can also be purchased at a florist, but these tend to be pricey compared to a home and garden center. But hey, if you need it now and got the funds, go for it! The experience outweighs the cost.
Some potted flowering plants that can be found readily available at a local shop would be Begonia’s, Orchards, Tulips, Hydrangea, Gloxinias, Violets. These plants can be kept indoors, but also some of them can be planted in your garden. Some do well as hanging plants too.

Growing Your Own Flowering Plants
Here is a list of supplies needed for growing your own potted flowering plants. For quicker results buying seedlings would yield a faster result versus seeds.
- The desired pot with drainage holes
- Premixed potting soil
- Flowering seedlings
- Sunny spot
- Water
This is a quick easy way to get your own flowering plants going and much more reasonable in price. You could also buy a few different varieties and plant in the same container if it is large enough.
Make sure by reading the tag that comes with the plants that they are all about the same for watering and sunlight. To many contrasts in needs may cause some of the plants to not do well and even perish when you are just starting out.
You could choose to plant in separate pots that way you can move them around to different spots of a room for their different needs.
So these are some ways that you can start enjoying flowers today or the near future if you decide to grow your own. Good luck with your journey and enjoy flowers in your life every day.
